The government is either defending the West\u2019s most important Indian Ocean base or handing it away under legal pressure from its own social circle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"586\" data-end=\"668\">None of those summaries explains the numbers. None properly examines the strategy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"813\">If we are going to debate Chagos seriously, we need to separate <strong data-start=\"734\" data-end=\"812\">law from optics, sovereignty from capability, and rhetoric from arithmetic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"844\">This did not begin in 2025<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"1339\">The Chagos Archipelago has been under British control since 1814, following the Treaty of Paris under which France ceded Mauritius and its dependencies to Great Britain.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Treaty of Paris (30 May 1814), formal cession of Mauritius and its dependencies from France to Great Britain. But there is <strong data-start=\"5836\" data-end=\"5868\">no cheque to the UK Treasury<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5871\" data-end=\"5904\">So the British taxpayer now sees:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5906\" data-end=\"6064\">\n<li data-start=\"5906\" data-end=\"5959\">\n<p data-start=\"5908\" data-end=\"5959\">A visible nine-figure annual payment to Mauritius<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5960\" data-end=\"5990\">\n<p data-start=\"5962\" data-end=\"5990\">No visible American offset<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5991\" data-end=\"6064\">\n<p data-start=\"5993\" data-end=\"6064\">Simultaneous US pressure on NATO members to increase defence spending<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"6066\" data-end=\"6112\">That combination creates a perception problem.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6114\" data-end=\"6161\">NATO, Tariffs and the Burden-Sharing Paradox<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6163\" data-end=\"6679\">Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised members of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">NATO<\/span><\/span> for failing to meet the 2 percent of GDP defence spending guideline.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">North Atlantic Treaty Organization, \u2018Wales Summit Declaration\u2019, 5 September 2014, para 14, reaffirming commitment of Allies to aim to move towards spending 2% of GDP on defence within a decade. Available at: <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/about-us\/official-texts-and-resources\/official-texts\/2014\/09\/05\/wales-summit-declaration?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"6532\" data-end=\"6644\">https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/about-us\/official-texts-and-resources\/official-texts\/2014\/09\/05\/wales-summit-declaration<\/a> (accessed 20 February 2026).<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6681\" data-end=\"6725\">European governments are told to spend more.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6727\" data-end=\"6886\">At the same time, the United States benefits from access to one of the most strategically critical overseas facilities in the world, hosted under UK authority.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6888\" data-end=\"7046\">If defence solidarity is measured purely in GDP percentages, while strategic territorial access is excluded from the ledger, <strong data-start=\"7013\" data-end=\"7045\">the accounting is incomplete<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"7048\" data-end=\"7107\">The Hard Question: Could Britain Use Diego Garcia Alone?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7109\" data-end=\"7239\">If US\u2013UK relations deteriorated significantly in future, could Britain meaningfully utilise Diego Garcia without American support?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7241\" data-end=\"7444\">The United Kingdom does not operate a long-range strategic bomber fleet. Carrier Strike Groups are limited and rotational. Sustained Indian Ocean logistics at scale depend heavily on alliance frameworks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7446\" data-end=\"7605\">Strategic geography does not automatically translate into strategic leverage. <strong data-start=\"7524\" data-end=\"7605\">It only does so when matched by credible capability and durable partnerships.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7607\" data-end=\"7739\">If the UK is committing nine-figure annual payments for a century, the financial and diplomatic framework deserves serious scrutiny.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"7741\" data-end=\"7779\">The \u201cProfessional Circle\u201d Narrative<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7781\" data-end=\"8104\">It is true that Professor Philippe Sands represented Mauritius in litigation concerning the islands.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000ba20000000000000000_1553-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">International Court of Justice case records and related proceedings listing counsel for Mauritius in Chagos litigation.
